Resident Evil Retribution. - spoiler alert -

Where to begin, I really don’t know, it was awful from start to finish. By far the worst of all Resident Evil’s movies, despite the fact the last one (Afterlife) was already very bad, with its abrupt ending in the middle of a scene engraved in my memory. Well this one starts as bad as the other one finished, yes I know, it’s a pretty hard thing to do but they managed to do it. It starts with a playback of the intro scene followed by, guess what, the intro scene played normally. Pure genius…
This wasn’t the only problem with the movie, no, it had a lots of problems. First of all the directing isn’t very good, but what strikes out is the screenplay’s lack of quality, I mean really bad. Dialogues are simple, boring and often pointless and then the storyline is also very flawed, it’s like someone wrote this movie’s script in just about a day. So that you can understand some of my issues with this movie, and despite me being a fan of Resident Evil (mainly the first movies), I’ll mention a couple of them. For instance, those cool looking Umbrella secret labs that are built underground and are shown as a 3D schematic, well in this movie there is one of those but its layout, unlike previous labs, makes no sense what so ever. I mean, why would someone build a lab in which you have to cross 3 or 4 cities full of zombies just to get in and get out, makes no sense.  Then there is the appearance of all the previous characters, I was surprised how Nemesis doesn’t show up… All these past characters where cloned, just because, and now they come back, not as themselves but as someone else and, has that wasn’t bad enough, they have really poor roles in the movie.
If all that didn’t suffice to rate this movie very poorly, there’s the cherry on top of the cake: bad acting. No great actors were in this movie but some stood out, like Sienna Guillory, who plays Jill and I’m sorry to say this but can’t act at all, her idiotic commands (brilliant script) during the whole movie were ridiculous, or Milla Jovovich using the same hand gesture to say 2 completely different things to her deaf daughter (not sure if she was deaf or not, but why else would she speak in sign language).
In the end, after hour and a half, after all the shooting, shouting and running around, the only thing that was added to this franchise was a secret lab located underwater and blown up and the end of the movie, so nothing was added. A pointless movie and a bad one as well. Oh I almost forgot, you also find out that the next movie will take place in Washington where the White House is the last standing building and zombies are beating the crap out of everyone (my 2 cents: it doesn’t seem it’s going to be a better movie than this).
All in all, even if you aren’t picky with things like the sign language “dialogs” this is still an extremely bad movie and a continued fall into the abyss this movie franchise seems to have entered in 2007 with Extinction kind of looking down from the edge of the precipice.

Rating: 3.4
